Kernels hit three homers in 9-2 win over Whitecaps

P.J. Philips hit two home runs and Matt Sweeney added another as the Cedar Rapids kernels pounded out a season-high 17 hits in a 9-2 win over West Michigan on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.

Phillips finished the night 3 for 5 with 2 HR and 4 RBI and is the first Kernel this season to hit multiple home runs in a game. They were his first two home runs of the season.

Kernels starter Tim Schoeninger (5-1) scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed two runs en route to his fifth win of the season. Felipe Arrendondo allowed a single hit over the final two innings in relief of Schoeninger.

Mark Trumbo was 3 for 5 with a double and Chris Pettit was 2 for 5 with a double and RBI. Six of the nine Kernel starters had multiple hits.

West Michigan starter Laruen Gagnier (1-4) took the loss.

With the win, the Kernels improve to 16-13 as the Whitecaps fall to 17-14.

The Kernels have an early wake-up call on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 10 am, Iowa time. Doug Brandt starts for the Kernels as Angel Castro takes the hill for West Michigan.

The Kernels play one more game on Friday at West Michigan and travel to Clinton for two games with the LumberKings before returning home to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday, May 14th to host Clinton for two games.
