West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - For the second time in the past three days, the Whitecaps left the tying run at third base in the bottom of the ninth and on Thursday lost to Cedar Rapids, 3-2. West Michigan has dropped the first three games of the series to the Kernels.

P. J. Phillips hit his third home run in two days to lead off the second inning and tie the game, 1-1. The Kernels picked up a second home run off Whitecaps starter Angel Castro and took the lead when Hank Conger went deep in the fourth inning.

Conger delivered an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning that stretched the Cedar Rapids edge to 3-1 and proved to be the winning run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Scott Sizemore doubled with one out, Michael Bertam and Jeff Kunkel had back-to-back two out singles and pinch runner Deik Scram wound up at third base, representing the tying run. However, Audy Ciriaco struck out to end the game.

Gorkys Hernandez led off the first inning for West Michigan with a double, stole third and scored on a ground out by Ryan Strieby.

For the second time this season Castro allowed just four hits in seven innings and took the loss. Castro allowed three homers but just four hits in a 3-1 loss to Clinton on April 20.

Avoiding the Sweep: Coming off a four game sweep of Burlington, the Whitecaps will try to avoid being swept in a four game series for the first time this season. The final game of the series against the Kernels is Friday at Fifth Third Ballpark. Whitecaps and Cedar Rapids will square off again in July at Veterans Memorial Stadium. LHP Blake Holler (0-1, 4.50) will be on the mound Friday for the Kernels against West Michigan LHP Duane Below (2-1, 2.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Davenport University Career Startup Show begins at 6:25 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
