Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- The Lansing Lugnuts scored five times in the second inning and survived a late rally to hold on for a 7-5 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities before 8,174 fans at Oldsmobile Park Thursday night. The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Lugnuts, who are now 2-8 this month.

Lansing's five run outburst in the second saw all nine batters come to the plate. With the bases loaded, Jonathan Jaspe singled into center field to make it a 1-0 game. Jonathan Diaz followed that up with a two-run single into right field that extended the lead to 3-0. Travis Snider added a two-run single of his own to put the Lugnuts ahead 5-0.

The run support would be more than enough for Lugnuts' starter Graham Godfrey who made his first career start. Godfrey (1-0) threw six innings and allowed just two runs on six hits while picking up the win. The only two runs that he allowed were solo homers to Christian Reyes and Brandon Buckman.

The Lugnuts held a 7-2 lead in the eighth before the Swing put three runs on the board, highlighted by a Brandon Buckman two-run triple to right-center field. Mark Shorey's RBI groundout cut the lead to 7-5.

The Swing put two runners on in the ninth, but Seth Overbey induced a 5-4-3 game ending double play to seal the win. Overbey picked up his sixth save and extended his scoreless inning streak to 19 1/3 innings this season.

Lansing (17-13) and the Quad Cities (19-15) will wrap up the series on Friday night. Chase Lirette (4-1, 2.17) will get the ball for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by Brandon Dickson (5-2, 3.15) for the Swing. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with LAFCU Fireworks following the game.
