Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Buffalo Grove native Zach Borenstein homered and drove in four runs to boost the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 7-5 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night in front of 8,827 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Borenstein's blast came with two men on base in the top of the second against Aaron Brooks (4-7) as part of a four-run frame. Frazier Hall started the inning with a single and advanced to third on a two-bagger from Gary Mitchell. After the Borenstein homer, Abel Baker singled and scored on a double by Alex Yarbrough.
Cedar Rapids (31-38) added a run in the third as Borenstein knocked a sac fly to drive Kaleb Cowart to the dish, putting the Kernels up by four. Kane County staged a comeback with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. A two-base hit by Orlando Calixte drove home Jorge Bonifacio and Lane Adams. Bonifacio cracked a double to score Justin Trapp in the fifth inning to pull the Cougars (34-35) within one against Carmine Giardina (3-4).
That's as close as the Cougars would get. Cedar Rapids picked up an unearned run off Brooks in the seventh with a Cowart sac fly, scoring Eric Stamets. Gary Mitchell homered to start the eighth off Rudy Brown while the Cougars scored on a Stamets error in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring. Stephen Tromblee (S, 3) picked up the final four outs to finish the contest.
The Cougars are at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Saturday night when they take on the Kernels at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
