Lansing Lugnuts News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts' (46-21) bullpen surrendered seven runs in three innings, falling to the Great Lakes Loons (34-35), 7-4, on Saturday night at Dow Diamond.
With the loss, the Lugs lose their fourth series of the season. They need a win on Sunday to avoid being swept for the first time this year.
The Lugnuts led 3-0 heading to the sixth inning after a dazzling start by lefty Justin Nicolino, who used just 46 pitches to cruise through five shutout innings. He allowed three hits, one intentional walk and struck out three.
The first Lugnuts' reliever out of the bullpen was Bryan Longpre (Loss, 1-0), who loaded the bases with none out in his 2012 MWL debut. Jesus Arredondo and Scott Schebler took advantage, delivering RBI singles sandwiched around back-to-back O'Koyea Dickson and Angelo Songco sacrifice flies to lift the Loons into the lead.
Juan Noriega (Win, 2-2) tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Great Lakes.
Mike Thomas earned the save by entering the ninth inning with one out, allowing a run on a throwing error before inducing a game-ending double play.
Loons' starter Gustavo Gomez threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, three walks and striking out a pair before leaving with an apparent injury two outs in the sixth.
Gustavo Pierre was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored; Kenny Wilson also went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI; and Carlos Perez drove in a pair in the third with a double.
A pair of All-Stars start in the first half finale at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 17th against the Loons. Top prospect Aaron Sanchez (6-0, 0.84) starts for Lansing. Lefty Jarret Martin (2-4, 4.13).
The Lugnuts' next home game will take place on Friday, June 22nd, opening the second half against the Great Lakes Loons. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
