
Hawks Blanked by Slugging Whitecaps

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (35-34) managed just two hits Saturday and fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-0 in front of 3,028 fans at Coveleski Stadium. With the loss, the Silver Hawks are eliminated from first-half playoff contention. The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps play the final game of the first half tomorrow at Coveleski Stadium.
John Pedrotty (3-5) gave up two home runs and took the loss for South Bend, allowing six earned runs on eight hits over five innings. Kyle Ryan (4-2) worked eight shutout innings for the Whitecaps and snagged the win, striking out five and walking three.
With just two hits, the Silver Hawks matched their lowest single game total of the season and saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
West Michigan broke the game open with a four-run, fourth inning that included back-to-back home runs from Steven Moya and Curt Casali. Brandon Loy added an RBI double in the frame. The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-RBI base hit from Aaron Westlake.
The Silver Hawks bullpen held the Whitecaps in check, tossing four scoreless innings. Kaleb Fleck faced the minimum over two scoreless innings. Matt Sample did not surrender a run in the eighth or ninth innings.
South Bend's most substantial rally was in the first inning when Chris Ellison led off the inning with a base hit. Tom Belza followed with a walk, but Ryan retired the next three he faced to get out of the inning. The Silver Hawks never advanced a runner as far as third base in the game.
The Silver Hawks were outhit 8-2 in the game.
The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps wrap up the first half Sunday at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. EST. Right-hander Jesse Darrah (5-3, 4.38) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by Marcelo Carreno (2-4, 3.44).
