Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth on Friday night against the Peoria Chiefs but couldn't get even, losing 6-5 in front of 11,107 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.
Cougars starter Tony Evans was perfect through three innings but gave up three in the fourth for a 3-0 deficit. Javier Herrera answered in the bottom half off Chiefs starter Mike Billek, smacking his 11th homer to make it 3-1. After Peoria got one in the fifth against Evans, the Cougars answered again. Jose Pineda scored on a wild pitch, and Ryan Ruiz delivered a sacrifice fly off reliever Drew Dickson to bring in Myron Leslie for a 4-3 game. The Chiefs went up 6-3 with a pair in the sixth, but relievers Dan Fyve, Derek Tharpe and Jared Trout shut them down the rest of the way. Evans went 5 2/3 innings, gave up six runs on eights, walked two and fanned six.
Travis Buck's two-out single in the sixth scored Luis Perez to cut it to 6-4, and Tommy Everidge nailed a double in the eighth against Michael Phelps to plate Javier Herrera for a one-run game. Trout kept the Chiefs in check with an impressive ninth inning. Peoria had runners at second and third with nobody out, but the right-hander wiggled out of it. Leslie led off the bottom of the ninth with a double off Adalberto Mendez, but pinch-runner Gregorio Petit never got a chance to score.
Tim Layden (4-4) got the win for the Chiefs, and Evans (5-3) suffered the loss. Mendez notched his fourth save. The Cougars (20-22) begin a four-game series Saturday night against the Dayton Dragons. Joe Scott (2-1, 6.14) pitches against left-hander Omar Segovia (1-0, 0.00). The first pitch is set for 6:00 CDT.
