Dragons go bone-dry offensively in reversal of Thursday night fortunes in 7-1 loss, split series
August 5, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - After scoring 24 runs in the first three games against the Fort Wayne Wizards (55-57, 17-25), the Dayton Dragons (47-65, 17-25) ran into a brick wall in the form of Wizards ace Mike Ekstrom (W, 13-3), who kept Dragon bats quiet in a 7-1 Dragons loss at the hands of Fort Wayne, before a sellout crowd of 8,159 at Fifth Third Field on Friday night.
Ekstrom, who leads the Midwest League with 13 wins, strung together seven shutout innings, with five hits, one walk and six strikeouts posted to help Fort Wayne salvage a split with the Dragons in the four-game series. The Dragons were at one point silenced on nine consecutive hitters, and were retired in the last 11 of 12 times facing Ekstrom.
Fort Wayne got all the runs needed before the seats got warm, cashing in on a five-run, seven-hit first inning off Dragons starter Ramon Ramirez (L, 2-5), Two homers paved the way for Fort Wayne, first on a two-run bomb by Sean Kazmar, followed two batters later on Matt Lauderdale's sixth round-tripper of the year, a two-run shot. Drew Davidson added an RBI single before Ramirez could record his first out.
Ramirez actually settled down to last four innings, where at one point, he retired seven consecutive Wizards. Yet the Dragons were goosegged until the eighth inning, where Cody Strait cashed in newcomer Jordan Belcher on an RBI single off Brandon Kintzler (ND). Belcher also contributed to a highlight play of the night, gunning Davidson down when he tried to score from second on a two-out single by Bush. Belcher's one-hopped missile throw beat Davidson by three steps to end the inning.
Yet, it was an underscore to the night Davidson had, going 3-for-4 to lead Fort Wayne offensively with three RBI's. Fort Wayne hiked their lead to 6-0 in the fifth on Davidson's RBI single, sandwiched between Mike Baxter's double and a Tom Vincent infield single off Zac Stott (ND). The Wizards finished the damage in the ninth with Davidson's RBI sacrifice fly.
Tonys Gutierrez and Chris Kroski were the most efficient Dragons on the night, both going 2-for-4 each at the plate.
The Dragons head for Illinois for a four-game series and brief roadswing, taking on the Kane County Cougars Saturday night as lefty Omar Segovia gets the ball for Dayton, taking on counterpart righthander Joe Scott at 7pm. The game can be heard on radio at ESPN Radio 1410-AM and on the Internet at www.daytondragons.com, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 pm.
