Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced another roster move Thursday, placing relief pitcher Dennis Medina on the Quad Cities Disabled List. To fill his roster spot, the Swing were sent 2005 30th round selection Matt Trent.
Trent, a product of Wingate (N.C.) College, went 6-7 with a 4.58 ERA in three collegiate seasons, striking out 75 while walking only 28 over 53 innings. The 6-2, 220-pounder also saved 11 ballgames for the Bulldogs, and carried the closer's mentality into the professional ranks. In 14 games with New Jersey of the New York-Penn League, Trent was a sparkling 1-1 with a 0.68 ERA, including nine saves and 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
The native of Roanoke, Virginia enters a Quad Cities bullpen that has been wild at times late in games. While Mike Sillman and Jason Cairns have combined to close 26 games this season, they have also collectively walked 58 batters in 69 innings.
For the second time this season, Medina will head to the DL. The righthander was relegated to the DL initially from May 23-July 1, after fanning 20 without walking a batter through his first nine outings. Since returning the Venezuelan had remained effective, currently holding a 1-2 record with a 1.95 ERA in 20 appearances. In his last outing, however, Medina struggled, tossing only eight pitches while walking two and failing to record an out.
Trent becomes the seventh 2005 draftee to join the Swing, and upon entering a ballgame will be the 52nd different player to see game action for Quad Cities this season.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 24 active players, one shy of the Midwest League maximum. An updated roster follows this release.
UP NEXT: The Swing and LumberKings finish their series on Friday night, as Quad Cities sends Michael Cooper (0-0, 4.03) to the mound against Eric Hurley (10-4, 3.81). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 6:45.
UPCOMING PROMOTION: Bob the Builder will be on hand, with post-game fireworks courtesy of KWQC/WQPT/Star 93.5. Tickets are available for all Swing games by calling (563) 328-2000.
