
Hawks use two out lightning to beat Rattlers

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The South Bend Silver Hawks beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-7 Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium. Nine of the ten runs scored by South Bend crossed home plate with two outs. Cesar Nicolas homered, had three hits, and drove in a pair of runs for the Hawks. Nicolas went 10-for-13 in three games against the Rattlers in the series with three homers and six RBI. Wilkin Castillo had four RBI on a pair of two-run doubles for South Bend.
Nicolas continued to torment Timber Rattler pitching with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning to give the Silver Hawks (65-47 overall, 24-18 second half) a 1-0 lead.
Wisconsin (62-50, 23-19) came back with four runs in the bottom of the first. Jeff Clement drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to drive in the tying run. Omar Falcon knocked in three runs with a double to the gap in leftcenter for a 4-1 lead.
The Rattlers added to the lead in the bottom of the second. Brent Johnson doubled in a run, but was out trying to go for a triple. Then, Chris Colton stepped to the plate and launched his sixth home run of the season and Wisconsin was up 6-1.
South Bend rallied for five runs with two outs in the top of the third inning. Castillo doubled in the first two runs of the inning. Jereme Milons followed with an RBI single. After a double by Mark Reynolds put runners at second and third, Orlando Mercado singled in two more runs to tie the game 6-6.
Nicolas stayed on his tear with a one-out solo home run to leftcenter and the Hawks had a 7-6 lead in the top of the fourth. It was the third straight game with a home run for Nicolas.
But, Mike Wilson drew another bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7.
In the sixth inning, Nicolas drew a two out walk to put two runners on base. Castillo doubled again and two runs scored to put South Bend back in front. Milons followed with another RBI single and the Hawks were up 10-7 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
South Bend Reliever Hipolito Guerrero kept the score at 10-7 with 3-2/3 innings of hitless relief. Wisconsin put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth against Todd Stein, but South Bend closer Matt Elliott got the third out.
In the bottom of the ninth, Elliott allowed a one out single, but struck out the final two batters for his twenty-seventh save of the season.
The teams with the top two records in the Midwest League split the four game series at Fox Cities Stadium and their eight game season series.
The Rattlers begin a four game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night at Fox Cities Stadium. Cibney Bello (2-2, 4.23ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids is sending Ronnie Ray (4-1, 2.83ERA) to the mound. Game time is 7:05pm.
