Devil Rays fall to Kernels in series finale

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays were unable to complete the sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 4-3 loss on Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

An 3-1 lead evaporated in the seventh inning as the first Kernels hit doubles off reliever Ryan Bitter who came on to replace Matt Larson after a line drive hit him in the arm. Cedar Rapids put two on the board in the seventh and the go-ahead run in the eighth for the 4-3 lead and the win.

Shaun Cumberland was the Rays offensive star with a home run and a double in four tries. He had two RBI.

The Devil Rays begin the second half of their eight game homestand against the Fort Wayne Wizards in a Saturday night game that will begin at 7:05 p.m. The Devil Rays are presenting the nationally known mascot GURU in addition to a post-game fireworks display. James Houser will start for Southwest Michigan against Fort Wayne starter Joel Santo.

**Opening Day at the team's Club House Store in Lakeview Square Mall will be on Satuday, August 6. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Rays designated hitter John Jaso and outfielder Fernando Perez will join the team's mascot Doodle and broadcaster Mike Wagenheim to sign autographs and give away door prizes**
