Kane County Cougars News Release

Battle Creek, MI - The Kane County Cougars dropped their second consecutive game to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays after Wednesday afternoon's 5-3 loss at C.O. Brown Stadium. Frank Martinez had two hits, Jose Pineda homered and Jeff Baisley drove in his 90th run of the season, and T.J. Franco struck out a professional career-high eight batters in the loss.

For the second straight game the Cougars scored first, doing so in the second inning on Raul Padron's double against Greg Reinhard. The run held up until the fourth when the Devil Rays tied the game, and Franco allowed another tally in the fifth for a 2-1 score.

The turning point arrived in the seventh inning, as Franco allowed three runs -- one earned -- after two errors for a 5-1 affair. The Cougars fought back in the eighth from a Baisley double off Jeff Kamrath that scored Chad Boyd and in the ninth on Pineda's solo home run against Kevin Lynn.

Franco (2-1) recorded all of his eight strikeouts in the first four innings of the game and scattered nine hits over a season-high 6 1/3 innings in the loss. Reinhard (5-7) logged five innings for the win, and Lynn posted his third save.

The Cougars (24-16), who haven't lost a series since late June, send Jared Lansford (11-5, 3.03) to the mound Thursday night at 6:05 CDT in the third game of the series. The Devil Rays (18-22) will counter with Matt Walker (3-3, 3.26).
