West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - For the just the second time in the last two weeks, the Whitecaps came up short on Wednesday. West Michigan's six game winning streak was snapped with a 5-3 defeat in South Bend.
Despite the loss, the âCaps have won 12 of their last 14 games and remain 5.5 games ahead of the Silver Hawks in the Midwest League Eastern Division's second half race.
Things started well for the Whitecaps who took the lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Matt Joyce.
But the first inning ended on a double play when Cameron Maybin was thrown out at home by South Bend right fielder Leyson Septimo as Maybin tried to score on a fly out by Mike Hernandez.
In the second inning, South Bend took the lead on four runs allowed by Josh Rainwater.
Will Crouch hit a two run homer to put the Silver Hawks on top, 2-1. It marked the first time that the Whitecaps had trailed since an 11-4 loss to Peoria last Wednesday. The âCaps led or were tied for 55 consecutive innings.
Later in the second, Trey Hendricks scored on a wild pitch and Septimo drove in another run on a ground out.
Joyce scored on a double by Hernandez in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
However, the âCaps squandered several opportunities throughout the game. On three different occasions there was a runner at third with one out who did not score. In the eighth while trailing 5-2, the Whitecaps had two on with no outs but failed to score.
Ryan Schreppel pitched five innings of relief for South Bend with one run allowed to earn the win.
The Silver Hawks are 6-6 against the Whitecaps this season.
