Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 2, 2006) The Burlington Bees (16-24, 51-56) reached double digits in runs for the first time in the second half and snapped a six-game losing streak with a 10-9 win over the Clinton LumberKings (10-30, 33-76) at Community Field tonight. The win evens this series at 1-1 while the Bees lead the season series 6-4.
The LumberKings got out to an early 3-0 lead against Bees' starter Erik Cordier. An error on Josh Johnson in the first and a passed ball in the third inning made two of the first three runs unearned against the right-hander. The Bees rallied against Clinton starter Jake Rasner in the bottom of the third inning. Carlos Arroyo drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Omar Pena. After a walk to Ethien Santana, and a wild pitch, Jose Duarte singled up the middle to drive in two and tie the game at three. A base hit by Johnson and a walk to Mario Lisson loaded the bases before sacrifice flies by Miguel Vega and Jeff Howell drove in the final two runs of the rally and gave the Bees a 5-3 lead.
Clinton came back with three in the fourth on a solo homer by Chris Kemp, and RBI single by Jose Vallejo, and a sacrifice fly by Truan Mehl to go back on top 6-5, but the Bees answered with three more in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Santana tripled, Duarte walked and stole second, and Johnson bounced an infield single just over the mound to get Santana in to tie the game and move Duarte to third. A wild pitch brought Duarte in with the go-ahead run and Lisson lined a double that short-hopped the wall in right to for an RBI that gave the Bees an 8-6 lead and knocked Rasner out of the game. JB Diaz came in and got a groundout to end the inning.
Clinton got one more against Cordier in the fifth when John Mayberry was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ian Gac. The LumberKings then tied the game against David Henninger in the sixth. With one out, Henninger walked Matt Smith and Vallejo and Mehl singled to drive in the tying run. Henninger was charged with his first blown save of the season. Eliezer Garcia (2-2) followed Henninger with two scoreless innings and got the win when the Bees took the lead against Diaz in the seventh. Brady Everett reached on an infield single, stole second, and with one out scored when Pena blasted a two-run homer to left. It was Pena's second homer of the year and have him three RBI in the game. Diaz (3-2) finished the seventh and got the loss. Outfielder Joe Kemp pitched a scoreless eighth.
Kraig Schambough took the mound for the Bees in the top of the ninth, retired the first two batters on groundouts, and got a fly ball to left off the bat of John Whittleman that looked like the final out, but Santana dropped the ball for a two-base error and the LumberKings were still alive. Gac blooped a single to left that drove in Whittleman to cut the lead to one and Kemp singled to left before Schambough got Brian Valichka to popout to the mound for the final out and earned his 10th save.
The Bees and LumberKings continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Dan Cortes (0-0, 18.00) will start for the Bees against LH Zach Phillips (3-9, 5.61) for Clinton. The gates open at 6:00 for Thirsty Thursday sponsored by the Sombrero Bar & Grill and Episode 5 of Bees' Apprentice with the final three contestants singing in Bees Idol and a chance to make it to the finals. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
