Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Behind the pitching of Scott Taylor and the hitting by Robinson Chirinos, the Peoria Chiefs made it back-to-back wins over the Cedar Rapids Kernels with a 6-2 victory Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. Taylor became the first Chiefs pitcher this season to throw a complete game in picking up his seventh win of the year.
With the game still tied 2-2 in the seventh, the Chiefs batted around to take a four-run cushion. With the bases loaded and only one away, Robinson Chirinos notched his third hit of the night, a two-run single to plate Ryne Malone and Jesus Valdez. With two outs now and the bags full, Mark Reed came through with a two-run single of his own to make it a 6-2 game.
Peoria staged a two-out rally to get on the board. With the bases empty, Ryan Norwood reached on a check-swing bloop single to center. Chirinos split the gap in right-center for a run-scoring triple. With Chirinos on third, Alberto Garcia ripped a line-drive single to left to plate the Chiefs' shortstop and give Peoria a 2-0 lead.
The Kernels scored their first runs in the fifth. Anderson Rosario and Brett Martinez hit back-to-back doubles to start the frame. Stantrel Smith singled on a groundball through the left side to move Martinez to third, who came in to score on an errant cutoff throw by Jesus Valdez.
Taylor pitched a complete game allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits. The righty walked none and struck out six. Cedar Rapids starter Amalio Diaz, making his first start in a Kernels' uniform, got a no-decision going three innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Brok Butcher was draped with the loss, giving up four runs in four innings of work.
