Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Peoria Chiefs used two home runs in the fourth inning to break open a tie game and defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-3, on Tuesday night in Peoria. A three run home run by Robinson Chirinos followed one batter later by Yusuf Carater's solo shot off Kernels starter Andy Hill (3-8) provided the winning margin and dropped the Kernels to 18-20 in the second half of the MWL season.

The Kernels out hit Peoria, 10-8, as Anderson Rosario went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Larry Infante was 2 for 4.

Andy Hill pitched seven innings and gave up eight hits and five runs (four earned) with no walks and seven strikeouts. Robert Romero pitched 2/3 of an inning but left the game after re-injuring his shoulder. Chris Howell pitched the final 1/3 inning.

Peoria starter Mitch Atkins (10-3) struck out eight and gave up an unearned run and five hits over five innings of work. Matt Avery quelled a Kernels rally in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season.

The Kernels had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the ninth, but pinch hitter Hainley Statia was struck out by Avery and Brad Coon popped up to short to end the game.

Coon extended his lead over the rest of the MWL as he stole his 42nd base. Hainley Statia saw his 11 game hitting streak go by the wayside when he struck out pinch hitting in the ninth.

Infante, Mark Trumbo and Brett Martinez each had a double as the Kernels team batting average continues to climb. The Kernels are ninth out of 14 teams with a .242 team BA.

The Kernels look to bounce back from last night's loss as Amalio Diaz makes his first start for the Kernels against Scott Taylor (6-6). Game time is set for 7 pm from O'Brien Field in Peoria and the game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com , or on The Zone ESPN 1600 AM in eastern Iowa.

The Kernels return home on Saturday, August 5th for a nine-day, eight-game home series with the Lansing Lugnuts and Wisconsin TimberRattlers.
