Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill.-With four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Kane County Cougars handed the Cedar Rapids Kernels another 5-4 defeat on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Leading 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Kernels (45-68, 13-30) handed the game over to the bullpen which was unable to hold the advantage for the second straight game. Nick Mutz (0-1) replaced Aaron Meade, who started and worked five innings. Mutz walked the first two batters he faced before getting an out as Henry Moreno flied to center.

That was the last out recorded by Mutz as Tim Ferguson singled home Michael Antonio to pull the Cougars (56-57, 22-21) within two. Kevin David evened the score at 4-4 as he drilled a triple into right-center, bringing home Dean Espy and Ferguson. David scored on a wild pitch from Michael Johnson, who took over for Mutz, to give the Cougars a one-run advantage.

Edwin Carl (5-2) kept the lead in tact through the seventh while Kellen Moen (S, 1) shut the game down in the final two frames. Cedar Rapids put the tying run on third in each of the last two innings, but Moen wiggled through both times. Bryan Brickhouse started for the Cougars and lasted 5.1 innings while surrendering seven hits and fanning three. Jorge Bonifacio had an RBI single in the fifth to give the Cougars their first run of the ballgame.
