South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (57-56, 22-21) squandered a 3-1 ninth-inning lead Monday and lost to the Lake County Captains 4-3 in 13 innings at Classic Park. South Bend's four-game winning streak came to a close and the Hawks now trail the Captains by a game in the eastern division second-half wild card chase.
With runners on second and third and two outs in the last of the 13th, Jordan Smith hit a game-winning, RBI infield base hit. Right-hander Kaleb Fleck (2-2) surrendered the game-winner and took the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits over 0.2 innings. Nick Pasquale (2-0) worked three scoreless innings out of the Captains bullpen and earned the win.
The Silver Hawks carried a 3-1 lead into the last of the ninth inning, but the Captains rallied for two runs against Jake Barrett, who blew his third save of the season. Smith pulled the Captains to within a run on an RBI fielder's choice. Jerrud Sabourin tied the game on an RBI single through the middle.
Kerry Jenkins paced the Silver Hawks offensively, finishing 2-for-6 with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Bryan Henry finished 1-for-3 with a two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning.
Left-hander Keith Hessler started for South Bend and did not factor in the decision. Hessler went five innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits. The lefty departed with the Silver Hawks leading 2-1.
Kable Hogben tossed a scoreless inning out of the Silver Hawks bullpen. Seth Simmons did not allow a run in the seventh or eighth innings. Matt Sample struck out a season-high six batters over three solid innings.
The Silver Hawks and Captains conclude the four-game series Tuesday at Classic Park. Left-hander Andrew Barbosa (2-2, 3.81) will take on southpaw Elvis Araujo (5-9, 5.06). First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. EST. The Silver Hawks return home on Saturday, August 11, to take on the Lake County Captains.
