Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-18, 72-40) committed four errors and went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in a 6-3 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (21-22, 57-56) on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Lansing squandered runners at second and third in the second inning, runners at the corners in the sixth inning, the bases loaded in the seventh and a leadoff triple in the eighth.
Whitecaps starter Marcelo Carreno (Win, 6-8) was excellent in the first four innings before the Lugnuts pushed across three runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run blast by Chris Schaeffer (2-for-4, 2B), his first of the year. Carreno allowed six total hits, four of them in the fifth inning.
Justin Nicolino (Loss, 7-4) was tagged for five singles and three runs in the first inning but responded after that. The lefty worked five innings allowed just one more run, which was unearned, while striking out three and walking none.
The Lugnuts bullpen allowed two runs in four innings of work.
Aleson Escalante recorded two outs in the sixth before walking the bases loaded, with Tyler Ybarra allowing an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch.
Ian Kadish loaded the bases and allowed one run before striking out the final three batters in the eighth.
Kramer Champlin struck out one in a scoreless, hitless ninth inning.
In the loss, third baseman Gustavo Pierre doubled twice in four at-bats, though he also committed two of Lansing's quartet of errors. Outfielders Michael Crouse and Nick Baligod each missed catches in the fourth inning, leading to an unearned run.
The Lansing Lugnuts continue their seven-game homestand at Cooley Law School Stadium on an Eat-A-Palooza Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., offering the value of $17 ticket for a ticket and all-you-can-eat food inside the ballpark!
The Lugnuts send Anthony DeSclafani (9-3, 2.96) to the mound against the Whitecaps' Jeff Ferrell (4-4, 4.42), the reigning MWL pitcher of the week. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the Cooley Law School Stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
