Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons in game three of four at Dow Diamond on Monday evening by the score of 5-2. The Loons were gifted two runs off wild pitches from Dragons pitchers, who totaled five on the night.
Tied 2-2, Loons outfielder Scott Schebler took the lead away from the Dragons in the sixth inning with an RBI double off the wall to score Pratt Maynard, who was in scoring position because of a Dayton wild pitch. The Loons continued to add runs to the scoreboard by scoring Schebler off a single from Jeff Hunt and gave the Loons a 4-2 advantage.
The Loons never looked back, scoring an additional run in the seventh inning. O'Koyea Dickson hit a double to center field and scored on a Nick Akins single to give the Loons their final run.
"It felt great," Schebler, who finished 2 for 4, said of the win. "Especially since I felt like we played well enough to win the other two [of the series], we just came up short down the stretch in those games and to get off that losing streak is big, especially against a team we should beat."
In the first inning, Jesus Arredondo capitalized on two wild pitches by Dragons starter Robert Stephenson to score the Loons first run of the night after reaching base on a single to left field. Stephenson was pulled from the game after just four innings of work. The Loons second baseman scored again in the fifth inning, this time on a wild pitch from relief pitcher Lucas O'Rear.
The run gave the Loons a 2-1 lead, but the Dragons quickly answered in the top of the sixth. Waldrop hit a double off Loons starter Arismendy Ozoria and scored on an RBI-single by Yovan Gonzalez to center field. Ozoria pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and only two earned runs on 93 pitches. Ozoria recorded the win, his eighth, with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Loons bullpen of Juan Noriega, Danny Coulombe, and Juan Rodriguez, combined for seven strikeouts to collectively shut down the Dragons through three innings and preserve the Loons victory. Rodriguez recorded his first save of the season.
The Loons will wrap up their four game series with the Dayton Dragons Tuesday, August 7. The probable starter for the Loons is RHP Raydel Sanchez (3-6, 4.39 ERA) slated to face-off against Dragons starter RHP Wes Mugarian (0-3, 7.20 ERA). After the game the Great Lakes Loons present a Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
