Clinton LumberKings News Release

Peoria, IL - The close games and road wins keep on coming for the Clinton LumberKings. With a 3-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field, the LumberKings guaranteed themselves a winning road trip.

The afternoon affair was a pitcher's duel between Bobby Shore of Clinton and Michael Jensen of Peoria. Shore somewhat blinked first when his defense let him down in the fourth inning. In a 0-0 game, Bijan Rademacher reached first on a rare error by second baseman Dillon Hazlett. A double off the right field wall by Tim Saunders put runners at second and third with one out for the Chiefs.

With the infield drawn in, Wes Darvill hit a chopper to third that was gloved by Jharmidy De Jesus. He fired home to newly inserted catcher David Villasuso who got in a rundown with Rademacher. After working Rademacher a couple of steps up the line, Villasuso dropped the ball and allowed Rademacher to score and give Peoria a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Yaniel Cabezas hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice, allowing the second run to cross.

Shore allowed nothing the rest of his outing and struck out five of the final ten batters he faced. In his seven innings, Shore allowed two runs (both unearned) on five hits while recording a career-high ten strikeouts. Clinton got on the board in the fifth inning on Hazlett's two-out, run-scoring single to cut the lead to 2-1. Jensen left after five innings and allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

While Shore kept the Chiefs at bay, reliever Sheldon McDonald did the same to Clinton for two innings. The LumberKings finally put together the rally they were looking for in the eighth inning against Austin Reed. Hazlett started the inning with a single through the right side and was sacrificed to second by Patrick Brady. Dan Paolini singled to put runners on the corners for Kevin Rivers who came through with an RBI double to bring the game to 2- 2. Villasuso was hit in the helmet by a Reed breaking ball to load the bases for Guillermo Pimentel who delivered a deep drive to centerfield for a sac fly, scoring Paolini to take a 3-2 lead.

With Shore in line for the win, Clinton turned to Matt Brazis in the final two innings and he did not disappoint. Brazis retired all six batters he faced, four via the strikeout and picked up his first save. In all, Shore and Brazis combined to strike out 14 batters, a single-game high for Clinton pitchers this year.

The 3-2 win puts Clinton at 5-1 on the road trip with two games remaining. Game three of the series is Monday night in Peoria. Clinton sends right-hander Mayckol Guiape (3-0, 3.67) to the mound to face Chiefs right-hander Zach Cates (0-3, 5.28). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
