BURLINGTON, Iowa (8/6/12) - The Burlington Bees (55-57, 23-20) couldn't buy hits in their 3-to-1 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits (56-56, 21-22) on Monday night. The Bees only had a total of three hits and one extra-base hit that came in the ninth inning.

The club fell behind early in the game after the River Bandits scored one run off Drew Granier in the top of the second. Juan Castillo yanked a double into the left-field corner and Nick Martini followed with a base hit into right field. Castillo scored on a fielder's choice when Luis Mateo hit a ground ball towards the hole between short and third. Sean Jamieson got to the ball, but the Bees couldn't turn the double play. The Bees trailed 1-to-0 after the second inning.

Offense was hard to come by on Monday night and the Bees struggled to simply get hits against the River Bandits. Nick Rickles supplied the Bees' first hit with a knock into left field to lead off the bottom of the third. But the Bees didn't have another hit until Bobby Crocker had a two-out single in sixth. In fact, the Bees had 11 consecutive batters step up to the plate but fail to get a base hit.

Granier pitched through a big jam in the top of the sixth with Juan Castillo doubled with two outs and eventually got to third base. Nick Martini was at first after a walk and the River Bandits threatened to score with runners at the corners. But Granier battled and induced a pop-up out of Luis Mateo. Max Muncy chased down the ball and caught the ball over his shoulder with a nice sliding grab near the first base dugout.

The River Bandits kept pressing and eventually scored twice in the top of the seventh. Granier walked the first batter and Jose Macias eventually allowed back-to-back doubles with two outs in the Bandits' half of the sev- enth. Granier (11-7) eventually took the loss after he only allowed six hits, three walks, and two earned runs in six innings.

The Bees trailed 3-to-0 until they finally scored in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and Rashun Dixon standing at first, Douglas Landaeta smoked a double to deep center field that drove in Dixon. The Bees avoid- ed the sweep, but watched Wade Kirkland hit a line drive into the third baseman's mitt to end the game. The final score of game three was 3-to-1 with the Bees losing their second game of the four-game set.

A.J. Cole (5-3) will try to help the Bees end the four-game series with a win on Tuesday night. First pitch of game four is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. For more information on Bees baseball call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
