Kane County Cougars News Release

Grand Rapids, MI – Kory Wayment's two-run single in the eighth inning propelled the Kane County Cougars to a 3-1 lead over the West Michigan Whitecaps and eventually a 4-2 win Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Cougars starter Mike Rogers allowed just one unearned run in seven innings for his second victory of the season.

West Michigan scored their first tally in the first. Nick McIntyre singled, took second on a passed ball, went to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilkin Ramirez for an early 1-0 game.

The Cougars answered in the fifth against Whitecaps starter Dallas Trahern. Raul Padron led off with a double for the first Kane County hit of the night and Myron Leslie singled to move men to first and to third. Jose Pineda's RBI groundout scored Padron for the 1-1 affair.

Wayment's two-run single in the eighth came with Travis Chapman and Kevin Melillo aboard. Chapman had singled, Melillo drew a walk and both men advanced on a wild pitch before Wayment drove them home for a 3-1 Kane County lead. Eddie Kim connected for a sacrifice fly in the ninth to score Leslie and make it 4-1, and Rob Semerano allowed a run in the bottom half before closing the contest.

Rogers (2-3) got the win, Trahern (2-6) took the loss and Semerano recorded his fourth save.

Game three of the series is Thursday morning. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT. Derek Tharpe (1-3, 5.01) pitches for the Cougars (23-29) against right-hander Josh Rainwater (1-1, 1.00) for West Michigan (24-29).
