Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing could not get anything going offensively Wednesday night, as they fell for the fourth consecutive ball game, by a score of 4-1 to Fort Wayne at Memorial Stadium. Quad Cities has not won since getting a taste of first place on Saturday.

Phillip Andersen threw well for Quad Cities (28-24) in his Midwest League debut, though he was chased from the game after 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits, while walking two and striking out one. The Wizards got to him for the only two earned runs in the third inning on the strength of four singles. In the fifth, an unearned run crossed the plate after Matt Shepherd tried to cut down the lead runner at third base, but threw the ball off of the backside of baserunner Lachlan Dale.

On the other side of things Michael Ekstrom (7-1) tallied the win for the Wizards (29-22), holding the Swing bats silent for the second consecutive game. The ace threw seven strong innings, yielding only one run on five hits. Matt Varner came on to hurl the ninth, and recorded his league-leading 16th save of the season.

After sailing through his first two innings, the Andersen allowed a pair of runs in the third. Matt Bush and Yordany Ramirez led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and each moved up a base on Chris Kolkhorst's popout. Brett Dowdy's RBI single followed to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead, and with two outs Matt Lauderdale ripped a line drive to left field that gave the home team a two run advantage.

In the fourth inning, Dale led things off for the Wizards by doubling a 2-2 pitch to left. Three batters later, he scored on a Ramirez sacrifice fly that pushed the score to 3-0.

The Swing tried to battle back in the top of the seventh inning. Rick Ankiel led things off with a ground ball down the first base line that turned into a trouble. One batter later Joe Mather barely missed a home run, but did manage to put Quad Cities on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, however, Fort Wayne got that run right back. Tom Vincent led things off with a walk, and two batters later scored on a double off the bat of Sean Kazmar for a 4-1 advantage.

For the Swing Jake Mullinax was 2-for-4 on the day, extending his hitting streak to a season-high 15 games with two singles.

Justin Knoff hurled 1.2 innings of perfect relief, and Jaymie Torres rounded things out for the Swing bullpen with a one-run eighth.

UP NEXT: The Swing continue their four-game series at Fort Wayne Thursday, with Mike Parisi (2-4, 4.40) taking the mound opposite Clayton Hamilton (7-2, 2.20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 on WKBF 1270-AM, and pre-game coverage will begin at 5:45.

NEXT HOME GAME: The Swing return home to begin a seven-game homestand on Wednesday, June 9, as they take on the Peoria Chiefs. It will be a Hooters/97 Rock night at the ballpark, as well as 70's night with the Swing! We'll have live music on the party deck from 6:00 until game time, and drink specials will continue until 8:30.
