Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The South Bend Silver Hawks (32-21) rebounded from Tuesday's opening game loss, beating the Dayton Dragons (22-30) on Wednesday by a final score of 7-1 in front of 7,960 at Fifth Third Field. South Bend starter Koley Kolberg (W, 2-1) picked up the win while Dragons starter Josh Thigpen (L, 1-1) was tagged with the loss.
After playing even through two innings, the Silver Hawks jumped ahead in their half of the third, sending nine batters to face Thigpen. The Dragons allowed the leadoff batter to reach base, and the Silver Hawks capitalized. A Josh Buhagiar sacrifice bunt advanced the runner and then the Silver Hawks took off. Four consecutive batters then reached base off of Thigpen, including a triple from Agustin Murillo that plated two runs followed by a two-run home run from Carlos Gonzalez. A five run, six hit inning made it 5-0 South Bend through three frames.
Thigpen's rough third inning was the only blemish on his final numbers, 3.0 innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits finishing with two strikeouts and no walks. Alexander Farfan (ND) came on to pitch the fourth and fifth innings, and held the Silver Hawks to just four base runners. South Bend starter Koley Kolberg, meanwhile, pitched brilliantly in his 5.0 innings of work, scattering four Dragons hits while striking out six. During his appearance, Kolberg allowed just three Dayton base runners to reach scoring position.
Josh Perrault (ND) replaced Kolberg and pitched just as well, keeping the shutout alive through the middle innings. Perrault let his defense work for him, finishing with 2.0 innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits and striking out one. Dragons reliever Zac Stott (ND), who replaced Farfan in the sixth, surrendered a pair of runs in the South Bend eighth inning, which padded their lead to 7-0.
Mark Rosen (ND) followed Perrault and kept the shutout alive, pitching a scoreless eighth; however, the Dragons spoiled the shutout bid in the ninth as John Purdom scored on a Phil Gentry sacrifice fly off reliever Todd Stein (ND) to make it 7-1.
The Dragons and Silver Hawks continue their four game set on Thursday night with a 7:00 PM first pitch at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM. LHP Camilo Vasquez (2-2, 5.08 ERA) will get the ball for the Dragons while RHP Steve Jackson (4-2, 5.31 ERA) gets the nod for South Bend.
