Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays left 10 men on base in a 3-1 loss to the Peoria Chiefs Wednesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

After Jarrad Lavergne surrendered three runs in the first inning, it looked like another short outing for the left-hander. Lavergne settled down over the next six innings allowing totals of three runs, four walks, four hits and eight strikeouts. He set down the side twice on strikeouts as well.

The Rays outhit Peoria 8-6 but stranded 10 runners and scored just one time in the first inning to make it a 3-1 game. Josh Asanovich knocked in Fernando Perez with an RBI single off Chiefs starter Sean Gallagher who entered the game with a 5-1 record and a 0.75 ERA. Gallagher was not unhittable on this night as he allowed six hits and three walks but only the one run.

Fernando Perez stole his Midwest League leading 24th base of the season in the first inning. Shaun Cumberland had two hits in two tries before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth.

The Devil Rays will send the starter from last weekend's no-hitter, LHP Jino Gonzalez (1-1, 3.09) to the mound against Peoria's RHP Jesse Estrada (2-4, 5.26) in a Thirsty Thursday game that begins at 7:05 p.m. All fans have the opportunity to enjoy select $1 pop or beer until the end of the seventh inning. Thirsty Thursdays are presented courtesy of Super Rock 104.9 FM.
