Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Michael Collins bad-hop single drove in the winning run for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the bottom of the tenth inning. The Kernels beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win was the second in a row for Cedar Rapids over the Rattlers. Alexis Casilla had three hits, stole two bases, and scored three runs for the Kernels.
For the second game in a row, the Kernels (22-31) got a run in the first inning. Casilla, the lead-off batter, reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on an infield grounder, and scored on an error.
Casilla started the Cedar Rapids third inning with a bunt single. He would steal second base to get into scoring postion. Sean Rodriguez dropped a bunt up the third base line and Rattler pitcher Julio Santiago threw wildly to first and Casilla scored.
Wisconsin (30-23) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Jack Arroyo's fielder's choice drove in a run to get the Rattlers to within 2-1.
Mike Wilson hit a long home run with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2.
But, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Drew Toussaint homered off Rattler reliever Cibney Bello to put the Kernels in front once again.
Then, Yung Chi Chen drilled a 3-1 pitch over the fence in leftcenter for a two-out solo home run in the top of the seventh to tie the game 3-3.
Chen started the Rattler tenth with a double -- his third hit of the night -- into the right field corner. Pinch hitter Marshall Hubbard was at the plate with one out and sent a grounder towards right, but Casilla dove, knocked the ball down, and barely threw out Hubbard at first for the second out and Chen ended the inning standing on third base.
Casilla started the bottom of the tenth with a single off Craig James. Rodriguez couldn't get the bunt down, but managed to single into left. James struck out the next two batters. Then, Collins sent what appeared to be an easy grounder to short for the final out of the tenth. But, the ball took a hop over the shoulder of Asdrubal Cabrera into leftcenter and Casilla raced home with the winning run.
The Rattlers remain tied with Clinton atop the Western Division of the Midwest League. The LumberKings lost 7-5 at Lansing on Wednesday night. Quad Cities remains 1-1/2 games behind the Rattlers and Clinton in third place after a 4-1 loss at Fort Wayne.
Game three of the series is Thursday afternoon. Jason Snyder (5-4, 3.60ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has not announced a starter for the game yet. Game time is 12:00 noon.
