Geneva, IL – The Kane County Cougars were handed their worst defeat of the season in a 14 – 0 beating at the hands of the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars could manage only three hits while the Lugnuts cracked 19 on the night in the route.

The Lugnuts (75 – 62) took the early lead as League MVP Brian Dopirak blasted a two-out solo home run over the right field wall to give his club the early lead. Lansing would add four more runs in the second inning sending nine men to the plate highlighted by Dopirak's two run double to the gap taking a 5 – 0 lead.

The Lugnuts were able to knock Cougar pitching ace Brad Knox out of the game in the top of the third inning with a two run homer by Tony McQuade to take an 8 – 0 lead. Knox allowed eight runs on 11 hits while striking out two after 2.2 innings as Dan Fyvie came on to strike out Brian Dopirak to end the inning. Fyvie would allow only one hit over the next three innings keeping it an 8 – 0 game. Fyvie was pulled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning for Justin Crowder who allowed two runs on two hits with two walks giving the Lugnuts a 10 – 0 lead. Crowder was pulled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as J.R. Pickens came in from the pen and saw the Lugnuts rattle off four more runs to take a 14 – 0 lead.

Lansing starting pitcher Billy Petrick kept the Cougars off balance through six innings of shutout baseball allowing only two hits. He would team with three relievers to retire 14 straight Cougar hitters. Kane County (82 – 54) would threaten to break up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth loading the bases with one out. The Cougars would ground into a game ending double play handing them the worst defeat of the season.

The Cougars and the Lugnuts continue the series Saturday night in a 6:00 p.m. game. Dallas Braden will try to right the ship for Kane County as Yorkin Ferreras will try to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard at Elfstrom Stadium.
