Yanks fall to Dragons, 8-2

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Battle Creek Yankees dropped the opening game of their four-game series with the Dayton Dragons 8-2 Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. The Yankees came into the game with a slim one-game lead over Fort Wayne for the final playoff spot.

Dayton took an early 3-0 lead scoring one run in the first and two runs in the second inning. The Dragons made it 4-0 with a single run in the top of the fifth. Battle Creek scored one run in the bottom half of the inning. Enrique Cruz reached base on an error, stole second and scored on a Nick Walsh single to make it 5-1 in favor of Dayton.

Dayton tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-1 lead. A single run in the eight made it 8-1. The Yankees were able to score one more run on a Matt Carson RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, that made it 8-2 Dayton.

Yankees' starter Abel Gomez (9-10) went five innings allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out six, but was tagged with a loss. Ben Moore, Randy Vanderplow and Paul Thorp each pitched at least one inning in relief with Vanderplow throwing two.

The Yankees are now 36-31 for the second half. The series continues Saturday night at 7. Brandon Harmsen will take the mound for Battle Creek against Frankie Keller for Dayton.
