Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Danny Muegge went the distance and allowed just five hits for his first complete game and shutout of the season as the South Bend Silver Hawks (33-34, 75-62) blanked the Burlington Bees (33-34, 55-82) 5-0 at Community Field tonight. The Silver Hawks now lead the season series 5-0, shutting out the Bees twice and holding the club to eight runs in the five games.
Muegge (14-4) didn't walk or strike out a single batter, but didn't allow more than one baserunner in any inning. The outing was the eighth complete game for a Silver Hawk pitcher this year and the third shutout.
Bees' starter Chris Coughlin (5-5) allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings for the loss. The Silver Hawks got on the board with two in the top of the first. Jeff Cook walked, Alex Frazier doubled, and Chris Carter brought them both in with a single to center. The Silver Hawks added another run in the fourth. A pair of singles put runners on first and third with nobody out. Coughlin was able to limit the damage, getting Brian Rose to ground into a double play as Allen Mottram scored. The final run against Coughlin came in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Carter to leadoff the inning.
Kyle Crist finished the final three innings in relief and allowed a run on four hits while striking out five. The run came in the top of the ninth when Edgar Varela doubled down the left field line and Lino Garcia drove him in with a single past the drawn-in infield.
The Bees and Silver Hawks continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Ambiorix Burgos (7-10, 4.27) will start for the Bees against RH Chad Scarbery (11-9, 3.90) for the Silver Hawks. The gates will open at 6:00 for Family Night. Family admission is just $13 and Louisa Communications and JD Byrider will give away a bicycle. Tonight's "Pack the Park" promotion came up short, so the Bees are offering another $500 cash jackpot if the actual attendance can reach 1,500 or more tomorrow night. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on KBKB AM 1360 and Weather Channel 9 on local cable (audio only), but pre-empted on KBUR AM 1490. The pre-game show will begin at 6:40.
