West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
The West Michigan Whitecaps dropped the first game of a four-game holiday weekend series on Friday night in Iowa. The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and edged the Whitecaps, 3-2, in a series that will conclude the regular season. Both teams have already qualified for the playoffs that will start this Wednesday for the Whitecaps at home.
After four scoreless innings, each team tallied a run in the fifth to make it a 1-1 game.
Whitecaps first baseman Kelly Hunt belted his 20th home run of the season leading off the sixth inning to break the tie. The blast game him the club lead and the franchise record for homers. It also provided his 99th RBI of the season.
Cedar Rapids then got the deciding runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded double.
The Whitecaps and Kernels will now meet in game two of the series on Saturday night in Iowa at 7:30 Michigan time.
