Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-18) lost at home for the first time in five games, as the St. Paul Saints (17-13) went ahead to stay on a Jason Cooper home run in the seventh inning.

St. Paul got the lead during the first at-bat of the game. Saints lead-off man Alex Fonseca hit his second home run of the season to give St. Paul the early 1-0 advantage.

The Canaries went on top in the fourth inning. Trevor Lawhorn doubled, and Patrick Reilly hit his fourth home run of the season to give the Birds a 2-1 lead.

The Saints tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back walks put two men on base for Brent Krause. Krause hit a ground ball toward the hole in the right side. Canaries second baseman Joe Anthonsen ranged way to his left to reach the ball, but his shovel throw to first missed Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly. The error allowed Jacob Butler to score and tie the game, 2-2.

The Birds went right back in front in the bottom of the sixth. The bases were loaded on a single by Beau Torbert, a double by Trevor Lawhorn, and an intentional walk to Reilly. The Canaries got one run out of the opportunity when J.D. Reininger hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Torbert, and giving the Birds a 3-2 lead.

St. Paul used a big seventh inning to take a three-run lead. Steve Butler singled, and advanced to third when Alex Fonseca reached on a two-base fielding error by Canaries left fielder Cody Haerther. After Anthony Norman singled to score Butler and tie the game, 3-3, Cooper hit his three-run homer to put St. Paul up by three, 6-3. The home run was Cooper's ninth of the season.

The Canaries got one back in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on the corners, Beau Torbert hit a sacrifice fly to score Joe Anthonsen, to bring the Birds within a pair, 6-4. The run extended Joe Anthonsen's consecutive games scoring streak to nine games, but it was the last of the game in the Birds 6-4 loss.

Ben Moore (4-8) suffered his fifth loss against the Saints this season in allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out six. Todd Mathison (2-0) gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings to pick up the win for St. Paul. Mike Bille recorded his fourth save for the Saints.

The Canaries and Saints will continue the three-game series on Wednesday night, as the Canaries present a "Salute to the Middle Child."
