Late Runs Down Sioux City

Sioux City..El Paso scored two runs in the eighth inning as they defeated the Explorers 4-3 Monday at Lewis and Clark Park. It was the 18th one-run loss the Explorers suffered this season.

After El Paso had taken a 2-0 lead through five innings, Justin Nelson connected on a two-run home run for the X's in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Explorers took the lead in the seventh when lead off hitter Dustin Jones was safe on an error. With one out, Jones stole second, but the throw by El Paso catcher Eddy Rodriguez sailed into center field and Jones advanced to third. The El Paso centerfielder Kennard Bibbs over ran the throw and Jones would score to give the Explorers a 3-2 lead as the Diablos made three errors in the inning.

With two outs in the eighth, El Paso would score two runs on a RBI single by Mike Provencher and a RBI double by Jerry Verastegui. It was Verastegui's third double of the game.

The second game of the three-game series between the Explorers and El Paso will be Tuesday at 7:05.
