Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - Ronald Lowe had struggled in his previous two starts, but the Shreveport-Bossier Captains' lefty was solid on Monday night, pitching into the seventh, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Unfortunately for him and the Captains, the Fort Worth Cats' righty Jae Jung was a little bit better, allowing only two runs (one earned) on six hits in the same six-plus innings. After Jung left with an apparent injury in the seventh, his bullpen held on to get the win, as the Cats took the series opener 4-3 in front of 2,009 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
Both teams got breaks in the game, starting with the bottom of the second inning. The Captains (38-40, 16-14 2nd half) had a chance to take the lead in the lead with the bases loaded and one out, but Tommy Bryant popped the first pitch up to third for the second out. Then, Angelo Fermin lined a grounder off the leg of Jung (6-3), but it caromed right to Michael Bell in time for the third baseman to throw out Fermin and keep Shreveport-Bossier off the board. Ironically, two Captains batters later, the same thing happened, as Richard Paz grounded one off Jung's glove that again deflected to Bell in time for an out.
The Captains may have gotten a break themselves after Fort Worth (45-33, 15-13) took the lead on a one-out double by Brian Fryer in the second, Cameron Blair lofted a fly ball to right with runners at second and third. Selwyn Langaigne made the catch and threw home to get Isa Garcia, who was trying to tag from third. Cats manager Chad Tredaway thought that Bryant missed the tag at the plate, and was then ejected by home plate umpire Wiley Clark after a heated argument.
When the fireworks had settled down, the Captains tied the game off Jung in the fourth, when Selwyn Langaigne hit a single off the wall in right to bring home Jose Torres from second base.
But Jung worked around a two-out single in the fifth and pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, preserving the new Cats lead. Fort Worth grabbed that advantage in the fifth, when Kelley Gulledge doubled, moved to third on a single by Garcia, and then scored on Spenser Dennis's sacrifice fly. The Cats added to the lead in the sixth, when John Allen doubled with one out, and then third baseman Andres Rodriguez's throw to first on Bell's grounder went off of Christopher Garcia's glove and back to the fence, allowing Allen to score and Bell to go to second. Ryan Patterson followed with an RBI single off Lowe (5-9) to give Fort Worth a 4-1 lead.
The Captains battled back with single runs in the seventh and eighth, driven in by Garcia and pinch-hitter Kevin Griffin, respectively, but left two men on in the seventh against Ryan Trytten, two more in the eighth against Gary Lee and one in the ninth against Scott Vander Weg, who picked up his third save of the year. All told, Shreveport-Bossier left 11 men on base, a day after stranding 12 in a 7-2 loss to Grand Prairie.
Notes: Seven of the nine Captains hitters had at least one hit, with Garcia, Rodriguez and Langaigne ach picking up two...Despite all of the LOBs, the Captains are 12-for-36 (.333) with runners on base in the last two games...Jung left after giving up a double to Tommy Bryant to start the seventh, and appeared to grab his right shoulder when pitching coach James Frisbie and the Cats' trainer came to the mound...Matt Petty (two innings) and Jakob Cunningham (one) finished off the game for the Captains, extending the bullpen's scoreless streak to 11 2/3 innings.
