Conschafter brilliant as Gorillas tame Steelhounds

AMARILLO, TX - Don't tell the Amarillo Gorillas that the Youngstown Steelhounds were the highest ranked team in the Central Hockey League coming into Saturday evening's contest. Especially after the Gorillas downed the Hounds 3-2 in front of better than 3600 fans at the Amarillo Civic Center. Brent Hughes, Brett Draney and Trevor Socholotuk all scored and Shawn Conschafter stood on his head between the pipes are the Gorillas tallied their 4th win improving to 4-1-1 on the season. Hughes blasted a one-timer past Steelhounds goaltender David Currie late in the first period to put the Gorillas up 1-0 at the end of the first. Youngstown tied the game early in the second but the Gorillas had an answer as Brett Draney notched his first goal of the season midway through the middle stanza to put the Gorillas back up by one. The Steelhounds would tie the game once again late in the third but Trevor Socholotuk assured the 2nd straight Amarillo win by answering with a goal of his own just 50 seconds later.
Shawn Conschafter picked up his 2nd win of the season as he turned aside 34 of 36 Youngstown shots including several point blank opportunities in the third. Conschafter also was a big reason why the Youngstown power play, which was ranked 5th in the league coming in, went an abysmal 0-13.
With the win, the Gorillas improved to 4-1-1 and are presently in first place in the Southwest Division with a one point edge over Arizona who is currently battling Colorado. The Gorillas are back in action Friday when they hit the road to take on the Lubbock Cotton Kings.
