Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Ron Vogel was spectacular in net making 28 saves and leading the Corpus Christi Rayz to their third win in four games Saturday night with a 3-1 win over the Austin Ice Bats. For the second time in as many meetings, the Rayz came from behind to beat the Bats. Saturday Night's contest capped a three-game road trip for Corpus Christi. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Sunday afternoon at 3:05pm on Caller-Times Family Day to host the Odessa Jackalopes. Up to two children 12 and under will receive free admission with the purchase of a regular priced ticket. For ticket information, call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.

The teams traded scoring chances and power play opportunities for much of the first period, but both penalty killing units stood strong. Then with just over four minutes left in the frame, Tim Vitek caught Austin defenseman, Terry Virtue in the face with a high stick. Virtue went down and was cut badly, and Vitek was assessed a five minute major and a game misconduct. On the ensuing major power play, Austin's John McNabb got the first goal of the game. McNabb scored on a rebound of an Aaron Davis shot at 16:40. McNabb's goal was the only tally of the first period. The Ice Bats outshot the Rayz 14-6.

In the second period, the Rayz turned things around with a pair of goals. Justin Quenneville scored from the right circle on a power play to tie the game at 2:46. Quenneville's goal was his team-high fifth of the season. The Rayz then took the lead when Ryan Carter equaled Quenneville with his fifth of the year. The Rayz created a turnover in the Ice Bats zone and Carter snapped a shot past Austin goaltender, Kevin Couture from the slot to give the Rayz their first lead of the year. Ron Vogel made a couple of brilliant saves to protect the lead for the Rayz. Austin scored a goal late in the period when referee Steve Patafie ruled that Aaron Davis scored with a high stick deflection. The Rayz outshot the Bats 9-7 in the frame and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

In the third period, Vogel and the Rayz held off the Austin attack and Derrick McIver sealed the game with an empty net goal with 17 seconds left in the game.

Ron Vogel was once again terrific for Corpus Christi making 28 saves for the win, improving his record to 3-2. Couture played well and made 21 saves on 23 shots, but suffered the loss falling to 0-2. The Rayz went 2-5 on the power play. The Bats went 1-7. Corpus Christi was outshot for the third straight game 29-24.

The Corpus Christi Rayz will return home on Sunday afternoon to host the Odessa Jackalopes at 3:05pm on Caller-Times Family Day. Children 12 and under will be admitted free (limit two) with the purchase of a regular priced, adult ticket.
