Comeback kids bite Youngstown

New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), are starting to find out how sweet home can be at the Santa Ana Star Center. For the second time in three nights the Scorpions powered their way to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Youngstown SteelHounds.

Fans in New Mexico were treated to another exciting CHL battle. Ryan McLeod continued his impressive rookie season with a game winning power play goal.

Undisciplined action for Youngstown proved to be the difference in the contest. With 6:34 remaining in the contest, the Scorpions Bob Kukulka was called for a slash when his stick came across Paul Esdale. Esdale's teammate Marl Johnson came to his aide and stirred it up with Kukulka.

Kukulka never was able to get his gloves off as Johnson threw punches before the linesmen separated the two players. Kukulka was assessed a minor while Johnson collected 17 minutes worth of penalties, five of which gave the Scorpions the power play they needed for the tying and game winning goal.

Before McLeod scored his game winner, newest Scorpion, Konrad Reeder tied it up just 34-seconds before on New Mexico's two man advantage. Robb Guinn launched a shot from the blue line and Youngstown's David Currie made the initial save but Reeder was on the doorstep for his first Scorpion goal.

The SteelHounds looked like they may take a win from the Scorpions on Friday night when John Wheaton scored his first goal of the season at the 9:26 mark of the third period. Just like Wednesday the Scorpions came back to delight the 4,112 at the Santa Ana Star Center.

After a scoreless first period the SteelHounds scored first just 2:31 into the second frame when Joey Sewell scored his third goal of the season. The Scorpions would tie it up on the power play in the final minute of the third period with Mike Falk's third goal in two games.

After a sluggish start the first three games, Head Coach Ray Edward's squad has come on strong with two wins. Next week the Scorpions will face their first three games in three night stretch. Thursday the mayhem starts when division rival Lubbock comes calling for the first time at 7:35 PM. On Friday, the Scorpions travel to Loveland before returning home on Saturday for back-to-back games with the Eagles.
