Condors Win Wild One in Stockton, 6-5

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors out-dueled the Stockton Thunder, 6-5, before 6,375 fans at Stockton Arena on Sunday evening. Six different Condors lit the lamp to lead Bakersfield to its second victory in as many nights.

2008-10-27 Weekly PopeStockton (5-6-2, 12pts) took an early lead 3:16 into the first period with a shorthanded goal by C Ryan Huddy. However, the Condors (5-7-1, 11pts) responded with a pair of power play tallies to take a 2-1 lead. D Martin Frechette struck first for Bakersfield with a wrist shot from the right point, sailing through traffic into the net. Eight minutes later, F Matt Pope (right) ripped home a one-timer from the left-wing circle off a cross-zone pass from D Ryan Mahrle, putting the Condors ahead through one despite shots on goal being even, 10-10.

F Andrew Ianiero promptly extended the Condors lead with his first of the season 19 seconds into the second period, but Stockton came back with a goal from D Jordan Bendfeld, making it 3-2. Midway through the frame, LW Mark Derlago and C Dave Bonk both potted goals just 22 seconds apart to put the Condors ahead, 5-2. Stockton, however, finished the second period strong, scoring twice and pulling within a goal, 5-4, heading into the second intermission.

The Condors notched their fourth power play goal of the game 1:32 into the third period, when F Matt Caruana found twine with a wrist shot from the left circle. Stockton again pulled within one five minutes later, but Bakersfield held on the rest of the way to win, 6-5. G Ryan Nie won his second consecutive game for the Condors, stopping 31 of 36 shots.
