Johnstown Chiefs News Release

DAYTON, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs (10-4-0) were unable to sweep a weekend pair of games against the Dayton Bombers as they dropped a 3-1 decision on Sunday evening.

Johnstown's strength this season has been its strong starts, but on Sunday Dayton was able to jump out to the early lead in the first period. Les Reany got free behind the Johnstown defense on the power play after taking a lead pass from Dan Riedel. Reany's goal at 7:33 was only the fifth first period goal the Chiefs have given up this season.

The Chiefs fell behind by two goals in the second period when Dan Lapointe scored a shorthanded goal at 8:29. It was the Bombers' first shorthanded goal of the year. Petr Pohl answered in kind for Johnstown, though, as he beat Paul Drew with a shorthanded goal. After Pohl cleared the puck, he raced in on the forecheck and caused all kinds of problems for the Dayton defense. Drew thought about covering the puck, but tried to play it instead, allowing Pohl to steal it from the defense and slip it in for Johnstown's first of the game at 11:35 of the second.

Johnstown's defense held strong in the final period, but the offense wasn't able to get on track until the final moments. Mayotte was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:30 left on the clock and the Chiefs had the puck in the Dayton end nearly the entire time. Paul Drew made a couple of key saves, though, including one on a Randy Rowe backhander in tight. Justin Bowers ended up scoring an empty net goal with less than one second left on the clock.

Kris Mayotte took his first loss of the season as he made 21 saves on 22 shots, while the Chiefs' power play went 0-for-5.
