Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - On a special night that saw the Victoria Salmon Kings celebrate their mascot, Marty the Marmot's birthday, the team looked to extend their unbeaten streak to three games as they faced the Phoenix RoadRunners in the back-half of a two-game set. Goaltender Jonathon Boutin started in net for the Kings while the RoadRunners countered with Craig Kowalski.
The Salmon Kings started the first period hard with a good fore-check against the RoadRunners. The Kings scored their first goal of the night on a backhand power play marker by Dan Gendur. Gendur wasn't finished there, scoring his second of the game on a 5-on-3 power play with only one second remaining in the man advantage. With 8.4 seconds left in the first period a Jeremy Swanson slap shot was deflected in by Scott Howes to make it a 3-0 Salmon Kings. That would be the score at the end of the first period.
The second period saw the Salmon Kings pick up where they left off in the first. A mere 52 seconds into the period Olivier Labelle notched his ninth goal of the season receiving a pretty pass from Patrick Coulombe. Chris St Jacques would add to the Salmon Kings lead with his second of the season. Victoria led 5-0 after 40 minutes.
The Salmon Kings continued to roll in the third. Only two minutes into the frame, St. Jacques scored his second goal of the game on the power play. Shorthanded, Darryl Lloyd would score his first goal of the season giving the Salmon Kings a 7-0 lead. Later on a 5-on-3 power play St. Jacques would finish off a cross-crease pass to notch his third goal of the game giving him the Kings' first hat trick of the season. Wes Goldie would finish up the scoring for the night with his ninth of the season with a slap shot inside the blue line. Victoria set a team record for margin of victory and set another regular season record by notching nine goals. Phoenix suffered their worst set back in their ECHL history. Salmon Kings 9 RoadRunners 0.
Victoria went 5/13= 38.5% on the power play and Phoenix went 0/4= 0%. The Kings out shot the RoadRunners 57-25.
