Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Paul Willett had a goal and an assist and Kevin St. Pierre stopped 22 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Fresno Falcons 3-0 in front of 5,274 fans at Centennial Garden on Saturday night.
St. Pierre was strong, in the first period especially, as Fresno dominated the opening half of the first period. It wasn't until Fresno's second power play of the game that the Condors stepped up. Willett blocked a pass at the Condors blue line and broke into the Falcons zone with Christian Skoryna. He kept it himself and slipped it past Fresno goalie Terry Friesen for the 1-0 lead.
The Condors extended the lead in the second frame, with a power play goal from Jason Ralph. The second-year winger blasted home his 25th goal of the season to snap an 11-game goalless drought for the 2-0 lead. Later in the period, Skoryna whacked a backhander between the legs of Friesen for his 26th of the year to make the score 3-0. Skoryna has 7g-11a-18pts in 15 games against his former mates this season.
The defense locked up in the third period to help assure St. Pierre's fourth shutout, allowing just four shots on goal in the last 20 minutes. The Condors maintained the lead, and finished with a 37-22 shots advantage over their Highway 99 rivals. The Condors reached 40 wins on the season for the first time ever, and also tied a franchise record with their 22nd home win on the year.
They moved into a tie with San Diego once again for second place in the standings with the win, as the Gulls lost 4-3 in Idaho.
The Condors travel to Fresno on April Fool's Day for a 7:00 game against the Falcons. All games, home and away can be heard on KGEO AM 1230, with "Condors Countdown" starting 15 minutes prior to game time. They return home to host the Idaho Steelheads and close out the regular season next weekend, on Friday and Saturday. On Friday night, the Rug Rats will entertain the crowd, as they return to the Garden courtesy of Time Warner Cable and KBID 1350. On Saturday night, the first 2,000 fans receive a Condors 5th Anniversary Cap, sponsored by Real Rock 104.3 and R.A. Kleiner Insurance. Both games start at 7:00pm.
