Alaska Aces News Release
LONG BEACH, California â B.J. Boxma ran his record to 7-0 against Anchorage with 32 saves in regulation and four more in the shootout as the Ice Dogs edged the Aces 2-1 before 3,598 Sunday at Long Beach Arena.
Playing their third game in less than 48 hours, the two teams slogged their way through more than 39 minutes in a scoreless tie before Anchorage broke through in a goaltending duel between Aces' starter Christian Soucy and Boxma. Dean Larson (now tied for the WCHL scoring lead with Yvan Corbin at 83 points) chased down a loose puck in the left corner and fed Kevin McNeill between the circles for a one-timer that found the upper right corner with 15.7 seconds left in the second period.
That lead would hold up until 6:22 remained, when Soucy stopped Jeff Attard at point blank range, only to see Jeff Marshall roof the rebound over his prostrate form to knot the contest 1-1 and create a shootout situation for the second straight night. As he did Saturday, Corbin led off the extra session by beating Boxma top shelf, but the Long Beach goalie recovered with four straight stops while Mike Barrie and Trent Clark scored in the first two rounds against Soucy to give the Ice Dogs their second straight shootout victory and the fifth-place spot in the WCHL standings.
Anchorage outshot Long Beach 33-26 but its power play has scored just twice in 40 opportunities over the first six games of this road trip. The Aces (20-45-5 overall) have just two wins in their last 20 road games and are winless in five overall but still own a winning record under Perry Florio at 8-6-3. Anchorage trails the Ice Dogs by one point in the race to avoid the league's cellar. Long Beach has three more games at home (San Diego Wednesday, Fresno Friday and Saturday) before finishing up with a road game at San Diego.
The Aces will take the week off before heading back to San Diego for Friday and Saturday night games against the second-place Gulls (42-21-5) at 6:00 p.m. AST. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
