Alaska Aces News Release
LONG BEACH, California â Kimbi Daniels scored twice, including the game-tying goal at 14:08 of the third period, but Long Beach pulled out a 3-2 shootout decision over Anchorage in front of 6,327 Saturday at Long Beach Arena.
The teams are now tied for fifth in the WCHL standings at 44 points, although the Ice Dogs (20-43-4) have two games in hand over the Aces (20-45-4). Tomorrow's rematch likely will decide which team will reside in the league cellar for the 2002-03 season. Anchorage goaltender Ryan Person kept the game close in the first period, even as Long Beach outshot the Aces 16-7, finally breaking through when Trent Clark found the range with a one-timer at 5:20. The Ice Dogs increased their lead to 2-0 when Tyler Willis beat Person with a backhander at 12:15 of the second period on a power play. After erasing a two-man advantage for Long Beach, Anchorage answered with a power play goal of its own as Kimbi Daniels snapped a wrist shot from the left circle that sailed behind Ice Dogs' netminder B.J. Boxma with 1:47 left in the frame.
The Aces failed to take advantage of their own five-on-three power play midway through the final period, but managed to tie the contest after a mental error by Long Beach. With six minutes remaining, at least three Ice Dogs were caught celebrating an apparent insurance goal while Dave Csumrik scooped up a loose rebound issued by Person and found a streaking Daniels at center ice, who coasted in on the ensuing breakaway and lifted a backhander over Boxma. Dean Larson's goal in the third round of the shootout allowed Person the opportunity to win the game by stopping Tyrel Frisky two rounds later, but Frisky kept Long Beach alive, and Chris Peyton notched the game-winner two rounds later.
The Aces and Ice Dogs will be up early for tomorrow's 3:00 p.m. AST start at LBA. If the teams finish in a tie, the club with the most wins would be declared the fifth-place finisher. The second tie-breaker would be head-to-head, and Long Beach already has clinched the season series. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
