Bakersfield Condors News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - After trailing 5-2 midway through the second period, the Bakersfield Condors exploded with five unanswered goals and stunned the defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces with a 7-5 win Friday night, before 4,669 at Sullivan Arena
Mike Scott gave the Aces (2- 1-0) their 5-2 cushion on a power-play goal at the 11:47 mark of the second period. But the Condors (2-2-0) took over from there, scoring three straight power-play goals during the remainder of the middle frame.
Joel Irving led the second period attack with a pair of goals and finished with three points on the night. Brett Lutes, making his season debut added a goal and two assists, while Alexandre Bolduc chipped in with a goal and a helper.
Josh Liebenow netted the game-winner 7:13 into the third period, beating Alaska netminder Derek Gustafson from the left circle. Bolduc sealed the victory with an empty netter just before the final buzzer sounder.
After Andrew Ianiero gave the Condors an early 1-0 lead, the Aces went on a tear, scoring three times in the opening frame to grab a 3- 1 advantage. Jim Dahl, Peter Metcalf and Olivier Filion each beat Condors netminder Jamie Hodson in the first period and the Aces looked well on their way to their third straight victory.
Sean Venedam made it 3-2 with a power-play goal four minutes into the second, but Jeff Smith and Scott tallied back-to-back, giving the Aces its three-goal cushion.
Bakersfield ended up 4-for-12 with the man advantage while thwarting eight of nine Alaska chances. Hodson stopped 33 shots to pick up his first victory in a Condors uniform. His biggest saves came in the third period, when the Aces tried to mount a comeback of their own.
