LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder (2-0-0, 4 points) laced together a three-goal rally while goaltender Cam Ellsworth made 22 saves as the Thunder took a 3-1 victory over the Long Beach Ice Dogs before 2,119 at Long Beach Arena on Friday night.

Tim Verbeek posted the game-winning goal in the third period, deflecting a left-point slap shot by Liam Reddox past Long Beach goaltender Mike Brown from in-tight at the 12:45 mark.

Ellsworth and Brown helped their teams duel to a scoreless tie through one period, despite the Thunder out-shooting Long Beach by a 15-4 margin. However, the Ice Dogs broke through with the game's first goal at the second period's 6:57 mark on a goal by Terry Harrison, who took a left corner centering feed from T.J. Trevelyan at the base of the right circle, and buried a wrist shot over an outstretched Ellsworth.

The Thunder responded to tie the game at 1-1 on Mike Lalonde's second goal of the year, who threw a fluttering puck from the right goal line toward the net, which caromed off Brown and into the cage with 1:16 left in the second.

Both teams battled for momentum until Verbeek broke the tie in the third period on the power play, with Reddox set-up at the left point on a feed from Brendon Hodge. Long Beach pulled Brown for an extra attacker twice in the waning two minutes, with Stockton closing the lid on Nathan Martz's empty net goal with 19:38 gone, when Martz intercepted a Long Beach clearing attempt and drilled a 20-foot slapshot home from the left circle.

Ellsworth stopped all 12 shots faced in the third period, while Brown finished with 31 saves in net for the Ice Dogs. Martz headlined Stockton's offense with a two point (1g-1a) night, including a +2 rating.

The Thunder faces a rematch with the Ice Dogs on Saturday, October 28, as Stockton opens the 2006-07 home campaign at Stockton Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard live (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing for a $6 "pay-per-view" rate on www.stocktonthunder.com, courtesy of B2 Networks.
