Atlanta Gladiators News Release
In his second professional start, Dan Turple made 24 saves for the Gladiators to post a 4-0 shutout win over the Columbia Inferno on Saturday night on the Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Blue Bennefield finished with two goal in the win for Gwinnett as the Gladiators improved to 3-1-0 on the season.
Bennefield broke a scoreless tie late in the first period with his first goal of the season with just 1:32 left in the first period. Scott Mifsud set up Bennefield, feeding him in the slot as they broke into the Columbia zone and crashed the net. Scott Lehman pushed the puck up the wing to Mifsud to pick up the assists on the goal.
Gwinnett pushed its lead to 2-0 on Bennefield's second marker of the contest. Parked in the slot, Bennefield redirected Jon Awe's slapshot from the point past Columbia netminder Robert Gherson for the marker. Mifsud also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett at 6:35 of the second period on the power play.
Mifsud pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-0 with his first goal of the season as he cranked a slaphost from 25 feet out past Gherson for the marker. Awe had his second assist of the night on the goal while Colton Fretter also picked up a helper on the marker.
Andy Contois posed his third goal of the season to push the Gladiators into a 4-0 lead at the 12:35 mark of the second period. Collecting his own rebound along the right post, Contois jammed the puck past Gherson for the marker. Matt York posted an assist on the goal, his first point of the season.
Both teams clamped down defensively in third as there was no scoring in the final period. Gwinnett finished the contest 2-of-8 on the power play while Columbia was 0-for-7 on the man advantage in the loss.
