Comets Shutout in Divisional Battle with Rochester
March 13, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utica Comets News Release
Rochester, NY - The Utica Comets were provided 24 saves from Marek Mazanec, but Scott Wedgewood and the Rochester Americans proved too much during a 3-0 loss on Wednesday at Blue Cross Arena.
Goaltending stole the show in the opening twenty minutes, as Mazanec and Wedgewood were impenetrable. Mazanec came up with nine first-period saves, while Wedgewood made seven of his own, sending the game into the first intermission in a 0-0 tie.
The second period featured more of the same, as the fast-paced affair continued in its back-and-forth nature. Mazanec stood on his head once again, steering aside all seven of Rochester's opportunities, while Wedgewood kept out 10 Comets attempts. The scoreless deadlock lasted through the second period and the two teams headed into the third period in the same fashion they entered the second.
The stalemate lasted for nearly nine minutes of the third period before the Amerks broke the ice. CJ Smith buried a high-slot wrist shot during a delayed penalty and made it 1-0, while Taylor Leier's breakaway strike at 14:20 doubled the deficit for the Comets. Rochester put the game out of reach with their third of the night, courtesy of Victor Olofsson on the power play with less than three minutes remaining.
The Comets are back in action Friday night against the Springfield Thunderbirds. Puck drop at the Adirondack Bank Center is at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to use the ticket exchange site, StubHub!. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL TV.
