Comeback Efforts Fall Short for Frederick
September 1, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth but ended up surrendering two more runs in the ninth as they fell to the Kinston Indians for a second consecutive night. The 7-4 win for Kinston was their seventh consecutive victory and their magic number to clinching a playoff berth is now just three. For Frederick, the loss was their ninth in the last eleven games, the worst stretch of the 2010 season.
The Indians struck first on Wednesday night when RF Abner Abreu came home to score on a RBI single by SS Juan Diaz off RHP Zach Clark. Clark gave up another run in the third inning when 3B Kyle Bellows drove home 2B Karexon Sanchez on a sacrifice fly to center. Kinston led 2-0 after three innings.
Kinston added to their lead in the fourth inning. With two on and one down, LF Donnie Webb grounded a ball to 3B Billy Rowell. Rowell tagged third for the second out but Webb beat the throw to first to keep the inning alive. The next batter up, CF Bo Greenwell, doubled to right-center. The Greenwell double scored DH Doug Pickens and Webb to give the K-Tribe a four-run advantage. 2B Karexon Sanchez singled home Greenwell to make the score 5-0 Kinston heading the bottom of the fourth.
Frederick did not score a run against LHP T.J. McFarland on the evening. McFarland allowed just two hits over six shutout innings. Keys starter, RHP Zach Clark, surrendered five runs on ten hits over five innings of work.
The Keys scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Following a bloop single by SS Pedro Florimon, RF Brian Conley hit a RBI triple down the rightfield line. The Conley triple cut the Frederick deficit to four runs after seven innings. Frederick kept it rolling into the eighth. CF Kyle Hudson and LF Bobby Stevens hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. DH Ronnie Welty followed with a two-run double to cut the Kinston lead to just two runs. Two batters later, 2B LJ Hoes brought home Welty to make the score 5-4.
Kinston deflated the Frederick momentum in the top of the ninth when they scored two runs off LHP Cole McCurry. McCurry struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings on the night but hit a batter and walked another before getting pulled for RHP Brett Jacobson. Jacobson gave up a single to 1B Jeremie Tice and then walked C Chun Chen to load the bases. Jacobson could not find the strike zone against 3B Kyle Bellows as he walked in a run to make it 7-4 Kinston. Jacobson eventually struck out the final two batters of inning.
RHP Cory Burns closed out the game for the Indians as he picked up his, Carolina League best, 27th save of the year. T.J. McFarland picked up the victory and improved to 11-5 on the year while Zach Clark fell to 2-3 on the season with Frederick.
Frederick and Kinston will play game three of the four-game series on Thursday night from Harry Grove Stadium. RHP Luis Noel (3-2, 5.01) will start for the Keys while the Indians will counter with RHP Joey Mahalic (5-8, 4.27). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. Thursday night is also Thirsty Thursday in the Mattress Warehouse Club.
