Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (SEPTEMBER 1, 2010) - The Dash scored five runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Hillcats en route to a 10-2 victory on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Dylan Axelrod threw seven strong innings to help Winston-Salem win its sixth straight game.

Two-out rallies were common for the Dash (34-28, 77-55), starting in the first inning. After Curtis Partch retired the first two men he faced, Jon Gilmore singled and then scored on Seth Loman's double to give Winston the early lead. Gilmore drove in a run with two outs in the third inning to make it 2-0 Dash.

With two outs in the fourth, Drew Garcia unloaded on the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run to right field, doubling Winston's lead. It was Garcia's eighth homer of the season and his first in over a month, ending a span of 104 homerless at bats.

The Dash did the bulk of its damage in the bottom of the fifth. With men at first and second and two outs in the inning, Nick Ciolli doubled to right field, scoring Jose Martinez. Partch (6-11) fell behind Luis Sierra 2-0 before intentionally walking the first baseman to load the bases. Jason Bour made the Hillcats (30-33, 59-74) pay, drilling a wall-ball double to left field. Three runs scored to extend Winston-Salem's lead to eight runs. Greg Paiml made it 9-0 Dash with an RBI single off reliever Blair Carson later in the inning.

After a wait of approximately 25 minutes between innings, Axelrod was a bit rusty when he returned to the mound for the sixth. He allowed four singles, including RBI knocks by Henry Rodriguez and Josh Fellhauer to make it 9-2 Winston.

The Dash added one more in the eighth inning against Andrew Bowman on an RBI fielder's choice off Gilmore's bat.

Axelrod (8-2) shook off the uncharacteristic sixth inning with a perfect seventh to close out his outing. He picked up his third straight win with seven innings of two-run, eight-hit ball. Jake Rasner threw the last two frames without allowing a hit.

Partch was dealt the defeat. He surrendered nine runs on eight hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.

Winston-Salem's six-game win streak is the team's longest since it won nine in a row from April 14-22. The Dash is now 14-4 against Lynchburg, the most wins it has against any other Carolina League team this season.

Jose Martinez extended his hit streak to a season-best nine games with a base hit in the eighth inning. Luis Sierra's seven-game streak ended with an 0 for 4 night.

The Dash goes for the series victory in a noon game on Thursday. LHP Joe Serafin (2-4, 6.70) tries for his second consecutive win against RHP Daniel Guerrero (2-1, 3.34). First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon and the audio broadcast starts at 11:45 on www.wsdash.com .
