Perez Named to Arizona Fall League Roster
September 1, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Kansas City Royals announced on Tuesday night that current Wilmington Blue Rock Salvador Perez will join former Blue Crewers Danny Duffy, Patrick Keating, Michael Montgomery, Johnny Giavotella, Eric Hosmer, and Derrick Robinson in the Arizona Fall League. Those seven men will represent the Royals farm system on the Surprise Rafters roster.
Perez began the season as the youngest player in the Carolina League, but has played like a veteran. The catcher was a mid-season Carolina League All-Star, who has consistently led the loop in gunning down would-be base stealers. He started the year swinging a hot bat, as he eclipsed his 2009 home run total in the campaign's first two months. After suffering through an elongated slump in June and July, Perez has rediscovered his groove. The 20-year-old led the league with a .390 batting average in the month of August.
Montgomery, Hosmer and Keating opened the season in Wilmington. Montgomery, who entered the year rated as the top prospect in the Kansas City system by Baseball America, won back-to-back Carolina League Pitcher of the Week awards before being promoted to Double-A. The left-hander has missed time with injuries, but when healthy has excelled for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He is 5-3 with a 3.53 ERA.
Hosmer was also dominant in a longer stretch with the Blue Crew. The first baseman led the league in hitting throughout the season's first half, leaving Wilmington with a .354 batting average and 42 extra-base hits in 87 games. At Double-A he hit more home runs in his first 20 games than he did in all 87 with Wilmington. He has 12 homers in 45 games with the Nats. Keating posted a 1.19 earned run average and five saves in 13 appearances with the Blue Rocks. He currently leads Northwest Arkansas with 10 saves.
Robinson and Giavotella each spent previous time on the Riverfront. Robinson was with Wilmington for parts of three seasons and is the franchise 's career stolen base leader. He was also named a postseason Carolina League All-Star in 2009 and added Texas League All-Star accolades to his resume this year. Giavotella also made the TL All-Star squad in 2010. The second baseman has batted .321, third-best in the TL, with 44 extra-base hits for Northwest Arkansas on the season.
The Arizona Fall League begins play on October 12. The regular season runs through November 18.
